Poem 18

A large black abstracted calligraphic character with branching, root-like strokes descends the center of the composition, set against an embossed cream ground with a pale grey circular form to the upper left and a small solid yellow circle to its right. A red seal is stamped in the lower right corner, with the pencil annotations "iv/L," "Poem 18," and "Hakumaki" below the print. This woodblock print by Maki Haku (date unknown) combines the deep-embossed blind texture of the paper with minimal areas of flat black and yellow color.
