Description
A single sailboat rendered with Maki Haku's sense for the relationship between concentrated form and expansive ground. The sailboat's triangular geometry — mast and sail against open water and sky — offers him a composition of austere clarity, a single shape holding the entire pictorial field in tension. His sailboat subjects suggest an engagement with classical East Asian painting subjects (boats on water, the lone vessel in a vast landscape) filtered through his abstract sensibility.
