$500–$4,000. Common landscapes: $500–$1,500. Key value factors: Maeda Masao's atmospheric mountain and landscape prints have a dedicated following among sosaku-hanga collectors.
A young girl in kimono is depicted in Maeda Masao's figure subject manner, the traditional clothing's pattern and color providing compositional material while the child's posture and expression convey the subject's individual character. Children in traditional dress were a consistent subject in twentieth-century Japanese printmaking, the formal kimono on a small figure creating a composition that balanced the decorative possibilities of the textile pattern with the expressiveness of the child's face and gesture. Maeda's self-carved line gives the figure a graphic directness.
