$500–$4,000. Fish prints are among the most collected subjects for this artist. Good mountain prints: $1,500–$2,500. Key value factors: Maeda Masao's atmospheric mountain and landscape prints have a dedicated following among sosaku-hanga collectors.
A fishing village depicted in Maeda Masao's [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) manner, the self-carved and self-printed woodblock technique that distinguished him and his circle from the collaborative [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) tradition. The village scene combines Maeda's characteristic bold black line work — inspired by both traditional Japanese ink painting and the broader international modernist interest in graphic clarity — with the naturalistic subject matter of Japan's coastal communities. The boats, nets, and modest buildings of the fishing village are rendered with a directness that reflects both the sosaku-hanga ethic of the artist's direct hand in the work and Maeda's particular feeling for rural Japanese life.
