Description
Taniwa (丹波) is an ancient provincial name encompassing the mountain interior of what are now parts of Hyogo, Kyoto, and Osaka prefectures—a rural highland region known for its agricultural villages, dense cedar forests, bamboo groves, and misty valleys. Masao Maeda (1891–1965) was a Western-trained painter and printmaker whose works often depicted Japan's interior landscapes with attention to light and atmospheric effect. The Glow of Taniwa suggests a luminous scene—possibly dawn or dusk light catching the mist over a valley floor or the ridgelines of forested hills at the moment of day when oblique light defines the terrain most dramatically. The title emphasizes the quality of light over the identification of a specific landmark, aligning with a modernist interest in atmospheric conditions rather than topographic description. Taniwa's reputation as an unspoiled rural hinterland gave such images a nostalgic resonance in the context of rapid twentieth-century urbanization.
