$800–$6,000. Common subjects: $800–$2,000. Key value factors: Miki Suizan's Kyoto maiko prints are the most popular. Condition and subject matter are key value factors.
Tsutenkyo, the covered wooden bridge at Tofukuji Temple in southeastern Kyoto, spans a maple-filled ravine that becomes one of the city's most celebrated autumn spectacles. Suizan captures the fiery canopy of red and orange momiji leaves framing the bridge's dark timber structure, a view that has drawn visitors for centuries. The woodblock medium suits this subject particularly well: the carver could isolate individual leaf clusters while the printer built up the warm autumn palette through successive color impressions. Suizan knew this location intimately, living and working within walking distance of Tofukuji throughout his career. The composition balances the rigid horizontal of the bridge against the organic chaos of the foliage, creating a tension between human architecture and nature's seasonal extravagance that defines Kyoto's temple landscapes.
