Every Shunsen print from the 36-actor series and the supplemental 15-print series (1929–1931) was limited to ~150 copies, making all original Watanabe impressions inherently scarce. Mica backgrounds and vivid color are key condition criteria that separate first from later impressions.
Sawamura Sojiro appears as Narihira Reizo, the romantic lead who combines the legendary elegance of the Heian poet Ariwara no Narihira with a theatrical narrative of passionate love. Sojiro's specialization in romantic roles makes this portrait one of Shunsen's warmest male studies: the face projecting the easy confidence of a man whose beauty and feeling are his primary attributes, the palette of soft warm tones appropriate to the romantic wagoto mode.
