Every Shunsen print from the 36-actor series and the supplemental 15-print series (1929–1931) was limited to ~150 copies, making all original Watanabe impressions inherently scarce. Mica backgrounds and vivid color are key condition criteria that separate first from later impressions.
From the Shunsen nigao shu (1925), this print shows Onoe Matsusuke IV as Nozarashi Kohei, the outlaw whose name ("bleached bones") signals his connection to the world of wandering ronin and highway danger. Matsusuke specialized in character roles of this type, and Shunsen renders his portrayal with appropriate roughness: the face older and harder than the romantic leads, the expression carrying the weariness and wariness of a man who has survived by staying alert.
