Mount Aso, the largest active volcano in Japan and one of the largest calderas in the world, dominates this woodblock print with its sweeping volcanic topography. Located in central Kyushu, Aso's caldera spans roughly twenty-five kilometers and contains an entire town within its rim. Nishiyama depicts the volcanic landscape with its characteristic combination of barren crater slopes and the lush green grasslands known as kusasenri that carpet the caldera floor. Wisps of volcanic steam or cloud drift across the scene, lending the image a sense of geological restlessness beneath the surface calm. The scale of the landscape dwarfs any human presence, and Nishiyama's palette shifts from the warm browns and grays of exposed volcanic rock to the vivid greens of the surrounding terrain.
