Chōmeiji, perched on the sloping hillside above Lake Biwa's eastern shore in Shiga Prefecture, is a celebrated destination for spring viewing, its terraced grounds and ancient cedar approaches surrounded by cherry blossoms in the season. This print likely positions the temple's distinctive tiered structures against pale spring foliage and flowering trees, with Lake Biwa visible in the middle or far distance. The vertical compression typical of hillside temple compositions allows Nishiyama to layer architectural forms, blossom-laden branches, and water in a single cohesive view. Delicate pink and white printing of the cherry blossoms would contrast with the weathered wood and stone of the temple structures, a tonal balance central to spring [meisho-e](/glossary/meisho-e) of the [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) period.
