White Beach

White Beach depicts a stretch of pale sand meeting clear coastal waters, a subject that allows Nishiyama to work with a luminous, high-key palette quite different from the muted tones of his mountain and rain scenes. The composition places the viewer at the edge of the shore, where the rhythm of gentle waves draws white arcs across the sand and the sea extends toward a distant horizon. Japanese white sand beaches, often backed by pine groves in the classical "white sand, green pines" (hakusha seisho) aesthetic tradition, carry deep cultural associations with purity and natural beauty. Nishiyama renders the sand with minimal ink, letting the paper's own whiteness do much of the work, while the water receives subtle blue-green washes that deepen toward the horizon.
