Key value factors: Edition order (first Watanabe/Doi printing vs. posthumous reprints) is crucial. Snow scenes, night views, and bijin-ga typically command premiums. Publisher seals and artist signatures authenticate first editions.
This untitled woodblock print by Nomura Yoshimitsu adds to the artist's catalog of shin-hanga landscapes. The traditional woodblock production method that Yoshimitsu employed involved multiple stages of craftsmanship beyond the artist's initial design. A hanshita-e, or preparatory drawing, was pasted face-down onto a cherry wood block and carved away to create the key block that prints the black outlines. Separate color blocks were then carved for each hue in the design, with registration marks ensuring precise alignment across all impressions. For landscape subjects like those Yoshimitsu favored, this process could require ten or more separate blocks to achieve the full range of greens, blues, earth tones, and atmospheric grays that bring a scene to life.
