Key value factors: Edition order (first Watanabe/Doi printing vs. posthumous reprints) is crucial. Snow scenes, night views, and bijin-ga typically command premiums. Publisher seals and artist signatures authenticate first editions.
One of several untitled prints attributed to Nomura Yoshimitsu, this woodblock work belongs to the Kyoto landscape tradition that the artist pursued throughout his career. The shin-hanga movement, which revitalized traditional printmaking in the early twentieth century, found in Kyoto an ideal subject: the city's ancient temples, gardens, waterways, and surrounding mountains offered an inexhaustible repertoire of scenic views that combined cultural significance with visual beauty. Yoshimitsu's contribution to this repertoire, though less widely known than that of Kawase Hasui or Tsuchiya Koitsu, represents an authentic local perspective on the old capital by an artist who lived among the scenes he depicted.
