Description
A true view of the Benten Shrine at Inokashira—the famous shrine to the sea goddess Benzaiten on the island in Inokashira Pond in what is now Kichijoji—was a popular scenic spot that had been depicted by many earlier artists. Gekko's treatment likely offers a view from the water, the shrine's vermillion buildings reflected in the pond's surface, the willow trees drooping their branches toward the water in the characteristic composition of this well-known Edo-period subject.
