Description
The Oishi Kuranosuke Yoshio print—the loyal retainer of Asano Takumi no kami whose leadership of the forty-seven ronin revenge attack became the most celebrated vendetta in Japanese history—depicts the chief among the loyal warriors who avenged their master's forced suicide in 1703. Gekko's rendering would present Oishi in commanding warrior pose, the figure's bearing conveying the combination of devoted loyalty and strategic patience that made him the defining samurai hero of popular imagination.
