Description
A companion to or variant of Gekko's snow-garden bijin subjects, this print similarly situates a formally dressed woman within the grounds of a temple in winter. Repeated treatments of the same subject across a series or as independent prints were common in Meiji publishing, and slight compositional variations — the position of the figure, the framing elements, the intensity of snowfall — could distinguish editions or sheets within a set. Gekko's winter bijin prints frequently employed a muted palette punctuated by the rich lacquer reds and deep indigos of the woman's garments. The cold stillness of a temple garden in snow, contrasted with the warmth implied by the woman's layered dress, gave such images their characteristic emotional resonance.
