Description
The 1895 print of Cavalryman Kimura Genmatsu depicts one of the individual soldiers whose acts of bravery were documented in the single-figure portrait series that ran alongside the large-scale battle triptychs during the Sino-Japanese War. These individualized warrior prints gave human scale to the war's statistics, naming and depicting specific men whose actions had been officially recognized as exemplary, creating a visual honor roll of military virtue.
