$500–$8,000. Common subjects: $500–$1,500. Key value factors: Gekko's prolific output makes most of his work affordable. Quality varies significantly.
The ferry boat crossing carrying representatives of the four traditional social classes—samurai, farmers, artisans, and merchants—was a subject rich with social commentary potential, placing the rigidly hierarchical Edo social order in the intimate and equalizing space of a boat crossing. The forced proximity of the different classes, their different costumes and social bearing, gave Gekko a compositional framework for observing social difference with gentle irony.
