Description
Fuwa Kazuemon Masatane, one of the forty-seven ronin, appears in the Gishi Shijushichi-zu series—Gekko's portraits of each of the loyal warriors who avenged their master Asano Takumi no kami. Fuwa, known for his skill with the spear, appears in the characteristic pose and costume of a warrior retainer, the identifying text of his name and clan affiliation providing historical context within the print. The series gave Gekko the opportunity to individualize each of the forty-seven through distinct poses and expressions.
