Description
This meisho-e print depicts the celebrated bush clover (hagi) plantings at Ryuganji Temple in the Kameido district of Tokyo, a site known for its seasonal flower displays. Hagi, with its arching stems bearing small purple-pink blossoms, was a canonical autumn motif associated with classical waka poetry and the melancholy of the changing season. Gekko renders the feathery sprays of blossoms with delicate key-block line work, likely contrasted against the temple's architectural elements or a crowd of visitors, situating the natural subject within the meisho tradition that documents specific Tokyo landmarks. The composition participates in the broader Meiji-era interest in documenting the shitamachi garden sites that retained Edo-period character amid rapid modernization.
