Harimaze prints assembled multiple small images on a single sheet—a traditional format allowing the artist to present a variety of subjects or figure types without committing to a single large composition. Gekko used the format for collections of [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) vignettes, seasonal subjects, historical figures, or botanical studies, often combining several thematic threads within a single decorative arrangement. The harimaze format rewarded close looking, each small panel a concentrated exercise in his characteristic blend of decorative and descriptive skill.
