Description
Hazama Shinrokuro Mitsukaze—the next of the forty-seven ronin in Gekko's portrait series—shares the compositional framework of the Gishi Shijushichi-zu while offering Gekko the opportunity to differentiate through subtle formal means: the angle of the head, the set of the jaw, the particular quality of the gaze that he chose to assign to this specific warrior. The series was a sustained exercise in the representation of loyalty as a collective condition expressed through individual human form.
