The Bijin meisho awase series—Beauties at Famous Places—epitomized the Meiji-era fashion for combining the traditional genre of beautiful woman prints with the new interest in topographical accuracy and named scenic sites. Gekko's 1897 version presents elegantly dressed women at recognized scenic landmarks, their costumes and hairstyles updated to reflect contemporary fashion while the compositional type remained rooted in Edo-period [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) conventions. The series was among his most commercially successful.
