Description
Katsuta Shinzaemon Taketaka of the Gishi Shijushichi-zu series adds another warrior portrait to Gekko's comprehensive documentation of the forty-seven ronin. The series as a whole represents one of the most ambitious figure-portraiture projects in Meiji woodblock printing, Gekko's skill in creating individualized faces and postures within a shared historical context demonstrating the versatility that distinguished him from more narrowly specialized contemporaries.
