Kogo in her hermitage at Sagano—the favorite of Emperor Takakura, who fled the Taira-controlled court to the bamboo district of western Kyoto and lived in hidden rusticity until discovered by the warrior Minamoto no Nakakuni—was a subject combining melancholy beauty with the specific atmosphere of the Sagano landscape. The bamboo grove setting, the simple rustic hermitage, and the beautiful woman in voluntary exile gave Gekko a composition of poetic atmosphere.
