Lord Yoshiie near the Nakoso Barrier—the Heian-period warrior Minamoto no Yoshiie, the legendary "God of War," pausing at the famous barrier in what is now Fukushima Prefecture—combines the great warrior tradition with one of Japanese poetry's most resonant place names. The Nakoso Barrier appeared in numerous classical poems; Yoshiie's stop there during his northern campaigns merged military legend with poetic geography in a subject rich with layered cultural association.
