Description
Mimura Jiroemon Kanetsune of the Gishi Shijushichi-zu continues the warrior portrait series, Gekko rendering this specific retainer within the shared visual language of the forty-seven ronin prints while finding individual distinctiveness through the particular combination of physiognomy and posture. The systematic completion of all forty-seven portraits was itself a statement of fidelity—to the historical record, to the men themselves, and to the popular tradition that had elevated their story to national legend.
