Description
The 1895 portrait of Navy Lieutenant Commander Uchida extends the series of individual hero commemorations to the naval service, the officer in naval uniform representing the Meiji government's pride in its rapidly modernized fleet. The naval officer's dress uniform, with its Western-influenced design and Japanese insignia, embodied the Meiji-era synthesis of Western military form and Japanese martial tradition that the entire series implicitly celebrated.
