Description
Okajima Yasoemon Tsuneshige of the Gishi Shijushichi-zu series continues the warrior portraiture project, Gekko rendering this retainer with the individual physical presence required to distinguish him within the forty-seven. The series' cumulative effect—forty-seven distinct human faces united in a shared act of loyalty—was more powerful than any single portrait could achieve, the collection making an argument about collective purpose that transcended individual representation.
