Princess Sotoori—Sotoorihime—was a legendary Yamato Period princess celebrated in the Man'yoshu and later poetry for her beauty, said to shine through her clothing so that even her garments glowed. Her appearance in the Gekko Zuihitsu (Sketches by Gekko) series gave the artist occasion to depict this luminous beauty through the visual convention of radiant garments, the design challenge being to represent supernatural beauty through the medium of fabric and light.
