The great victory at Fenghuangcheng Sino-Japanese War print depicts the sustained fighting in Manchuria's mountains that continued through the winter of 1894-95. The rugged terrain, the extreme cold, and the logistical challenges of supplying forces in remote mountain positions gave the Fenghuangcheng campaign a character different from the earlier Korean engagements, and Gekko's rendering would have reflected this harsher environment in the landscape elements surrounding the military action.
