Susano-o no Mikoto—the storm deity, brother of Amaterasu and ruler of the seas in Shinto mythology—was a figure of enormous power and volatile temperament, at once destructive and creative. His victories over the eight-headed serpent Yamata no Orochi, which gave him the divine sword Kusanagi, and his poetic gifts—he is credited with composing the first Japanese poem—made him one of the most complex deities in the Japanese pantheon. Gekko's rendering would have captured the deity's dynamic energy.
