Description
This print likely depicts a figure at or near a bonsho, the large hanging bronze temple bell found at Buddhist temples throughout Japan, in a scene that would have combined architectural setting, atmospheric depth, and human scale against the bell's massive form. Temple bell imagery carried seasonal and temporal resonance — the striking of the bell at New Year's Eve (joya no kane) was one of the most culturally charged moments in the Japanese calendar — and compositions of this type invited a mood of contemplation and transience. Gekko may show a priest, a pilgrim, or a bijin in relation to the bell, the scale contrast between the heavy cast bronze and the human figure generating visual tension. Atmospheric treatment through bokashi — misty morning or dusk tones — would have been typical, lending the scene an air of quiet reverence.
