Description
A second print depicting the encounter between the Buddhist protective deity Fudo Myoo and the young monk Yuten, likely one of a pair or series exploring this devotional legend. Fudo Myoo (Acala) is conventionally shown surrounded by flames, holding a sword in the right hand and a lasso in the left, his fierce expression designed to subjugate evil and protect the faithful. Yuten, as a novice, would appear small and submissive before the deity's overwhelming manifestation of divine force. Gekko's handling of fire—a technically demanding element in woodblock printing—would have required careful color registration to suggest the billowing aureole of orange and red flames. The print likely emphasizes the spiritual awe and protective grace of the encounter, drawing on the strong Fudo cult that remained active throughout the Meiji period despite official promotion of Shinto over Buddhism.
