Description
The chrysanthemum beneath snow is a time-honored subject in Japanese art carrying associations with perseverance and fortitude. The chrysanthemum's survival into late autumn and early winter marks it as a flower of unusual endurance, and its depiction under snow amplifies this quality. Gekko's kacho-e would show chrysanthemum blooms — likely varieties with dense, layered petals — weighted down by snowfall or emerging from snow, their warm yellows, whites, and pinks contrasting with the cold blue-white of the snow. The technical challenge of rendering snow convincingly in woodblock — using gofun (white pigment) applications and bokashi to suggest shadow within snow fields — is one Gekko handled with facility throughout his career. The background is likely kept spare, focusing attention on the blooms and their immediate surroundings. The chrysanthemum also held imperial and seasonal significance in Meiji Japan, adding a layer of cultural resonance to what might otherwise read as a straightforward botanical subject.
