Koson's vast output of ~450 designs spans birds, flowers, fish, insects, and occasional landscapes. While his large production keeps most prints accessible, early Kokkeido-period impressions with muted, elegant Meiji-era coloring are distinctly more sought after than the brighter later Watanabe editions.
Dated 1928, this egret print shows Ohara Koson at the height of his compositional powers — the great white bird standing motionless in rainfall, its feathers slicked against the body, beak tilted slightly downward. Koson's mastery of rain lies in the integration of falling lines with the subject's form: the rain doesn't merely fall behind the egret but interacts with it, beading on feathers, disturbing the water surface below. The oban format gives the vertical composition maximum visual impact, the egret's stillness a counterpoint to the rain's kinetic energy.
