Description

A lapwing — likely the grey-headed lapwing (keri) familiar from Japanese wetlands — stands on the cut surface of a tree stump, the angled wood form anchoring the composition. The crested head, long legs, and black-and-white wing pattern make the lapwing a clear subject for the keyblock, while the stump's growth rings would be carved as concentric lines exploiting the natural grain of the cherrywood block. Koson typically used a low horizon and sparse setting for such single-bird prints, leaving the upper portion of the sheet open with a soft bokashi wash. Tree stumps recur in his work as a perch motif because they isolate the bird while suggesting the human-altered landscape of cultivated fields. The print fits his sustained interest in waterbirds and shorebirds, a thread that runs from his early Koson-signed prints through his later Shoson designs for Watanabe Shozaburo.
