"Farmer's House, Evening" renders the particular quality of evening light settling over a rural farmhouse — the warm glow of interior light beginning to compete with fading daylight, the end of agricultural labor, the transition from work to rest. Japanese farmhouses (minka), with their heavy thatched or tiled roofs and dark timber frames, were architecturally distinctive subjects that shin-hanga artists frequently depicted as emblems of endangered traditional life.
