"Unknown, Ploughing Ricefield" depicts the seasonal labor of preparing the paddy field for planting — turning the waterlogged soil with a plow drawn by ox or horse, breaking the compacted earth so that it can receive the rice seedlings that will define the agricultural year. Ploughing the paddy was among the most visually distinctive of Japan's agricultural practices, the farmer knee-deep in mud as the animal moved through the shallow water. Bakufu's rendering honors this foundational agricultural labor with observational care.
