Castle

Castle, printed in an edition of four, represents Hashimoto's generalized approach to the castle subject when he chose to depict the architectural type rather than a specific named fortification. Without the identifying details of a particular castle's donjon or gate, the image becomes a meditation on the formal qualities shared by all of Japan's historic fortifications: massive stone foundations, whitewashed walls, complex layered roof structures, and the commanding relationship to the landscape they dominate.
