Description
Himeiji Castle (alternate romanization of Himeji), printed in 1958, represents a second major engagement with one of Japan's most celebrated surviving castles. Where his 1956 Hikone Castle print explored one fortress, this 1958 version returns to the subject of Himeji's extraordinary architecture from what is likely a different viewpoint or seasonal condition. The castle's complex layered rooflines and whitewashed walls presented Hashimoto with an architectural composition of exceptional richness, each tier providing another horizontal element for his geometric sensibility to articulate.
