Description
A morning harbour scene rendered in mokuhanga, Harbour in the morning likely depicts moored fishing boats, wooden hulls, and the low horizontal of a quay reading against the soft luminosity of dawn over water. Hashimoto's harbour subjects typically rely on bokashi gradation pulled across the sky and water to register the cool shift from night to morning, with the masts and rigging cut as crisp keyblock lines that anchor the looser tonal washes. The composition would be organised around the geometry of vessels and shoreline architecture, an extension of the structural eye that defined his castle and temple work. As a sosaku-hanga practitioner, Hashimoto designed, carved, and printed every block himself, and his seascapes remain comparatively scarce within an oeuvre dominated by architectural subjects. The print connects to a small group of coastal and waterside images in which he turned his attention from masonry and tile to the equally rigid geometry of boats, piers, and harbour walls, treating maritime infrastructure as another form of built environment.
