"Bang Bang" (Ban Ban) is one of Binnie's most provocative works — a contemporary bijin-ga in which a woman poses with a pistol, the Western weapon introduced into the traditional composition with deliberate anachronistic force. The title's onomatopoeia announces the confrontational quality of the juxtaposition: the gun's violence placed in the graceful formal world of shin-hanga beauty portraiture. The work is a comment on tradition, desire, and the range of what the bijin-ga genre can contain.
