Kitaoka Nizaemon XIII — head of one of kabuki's great acting families — is depicted here in a villain role, the kabuki villain's distinctive makeup and expression requiring the actor to project cold calculation and malevolent authority. Kabuki villainy is a performance mode as formalized as its heroism, and Binnie's portrait of Nizaemon in this role captures the theatrical precision required: every line of the face, every element of the costume, arranged to project controlled menace.
