From the Large-Head Kabuki Portraits series, this print depicts Ichikawa Ennosuke III in the role of the villain Nikki Danjo — one of kabuki's most celebrated supernatural villains, who can transform into a rat and whose menace is conveyed through controlled, stylized performance rather than explicit action. The okubi-e format places Ennosuke's distinctive makeup and expression at the center of the composition, Binnie's precise woodblock carving capturing the performance's calculated evil with the same formality the actor brings to the stage.
