Description
"Sleeping Woman" (Nemuru onna) is among the most intimate subjects in bijin-ga — the female figure in the specific quality of sleep, unguarded and self-unconscious. In the ukiyo-e tradition, sleeping women were depicted with a particular attentiveness to the body's relaxed weight and the vulnerability of the undefended face. Binnie's version brings his contemporary eye to this classical subject, the woodblock technique's precision rendering the figure with the care and delicacy the subject demands.
