Description

A vertical panel of collaged and mokuhanga-printed paper divides the composition into blocks of color: a deep indigo-blue field marked with faint calligraphic strokes and a bridge-like linear structure on the left, a bright horizontal-striped yellow panel in the center, and narrower strips of grey-and-white banding and dense vertical Japanese text along the right edge. A monochrome printed figure in traditional dress, seen mostly in outline with a topknot and layered robes, stands facing right at the boundary between the blue and yellow sections. The overall effect is quiet and meditative, built from flat abstract color fields set against small passages of script and pattern; the work is Paul Furneaux's "Bridge (Hashi)," in mokuhanga and collage on wood board.
