$1,000–$8,000. Common prints: $1,000–$2,500. Key value factors: Iwami Reika's luminous abstract prints are among the most sought-after by female Japanese printmakers. Her cosmic and water-inspired works command the highest prices.
Created in 1986 as edition 25 of 80, Unasaka-B takes its title from a Japanese word meaning "sea slope" or the gentle gradient where water meets land. The larger edition size of 80, compared to the more typical 50 in Iwami's other works, suggests this print had particular commercial or critical appeal. The "B" variant indicates a paired composition, with an Unasaka-A offering an alternative treatment of the same liminal zone where ocean and shore interact. Iwami's exploration of this transitional space, where water is neither fully open sea nor fully beach, aligns with her broader interest in boundaries and thresholds. The unasaka is a place of constant negotiation, where each wave slightly redraws the line between wet and dry, and Iwami's print captures this perpetual redefinition in static form.
