Costume for Bugaku Court Dance, from the Spring Rain Collection (Harusame shu), vol. 1, is a [surimono](/glossary/surimono) print by Ryuryukyo Shinsai in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, dated to about 1818. The composition centers on the elaborate costume worn for bugaku, the ancient court dance imported from continental Asia and preserved within the imperial and shrine performance tradition. As a designer within the Hokusai school after his earlier training under Tawaraya Sori, Shinsai used the surimono format to engage with such classical subjects, and within the Harusame album the bugaku costume marks a high point of formal allusion. The robe is presented as a flat, almost iconic display of textile, with attention paid to the layered silks, the patterned brocade, and the small accessories that complete the dancer's outfit. Surimono printers used metallic pigments, mica, and blind embossing to register the silks' patterns and the gleam of decorative metal fittings, and an early nineteenth-century impression preserves that luxury finish. The implied dancer is absent, so the costume reads as both portrait of office and trigger for poetic reflection on classical antiquity, ritual continuity, and the persistence of music and movement across centuries. The kyoka verses originally accompanying the sheet would have responded to these themes within the Harusame project's New Year framework. The Metropolitan Museum of Art preserves the print as a notable example of Shinsai's reach into the world of court ceremony from within the Hokusai school's surimono tradition.
