Description
Street Scene in the Springtime is an early nineteenth-century [surimono](/glossary/surimono) in which Shinsai treats the urban texture of Edo as a seasonal genre subject. Figures move through a street observed in the moment of spring transition, the composition unfolding with the gentle horizontal rhythm Shinsai favored in his more populated prints. The deluxe surimono production—metallic accents, embossed whites, fine color modulation—supplied a level of surface refinement unavailable in commercial [nishiki-e](/glossary/nishiki-e) and well suited to a print intended for circulation within a kyoka club. The Art Institute of Chicago, which holds the impression, has built one of the strongest Shinsai collections in the West, and prints like this one are essential for understanding the artist's range beyond his more famous still-life designs.
